How to read suspicious protein numbers

A large number can come from a large serving, selective wording or ingredients that complicate a crude nitrogen test. Read the whole panel before reaching a conclusion.

The oversized-serving effect

“30 g protein” sounds automatically stronger than “24 g” until you learn that the servings are 45 g and 30 g. Divide protein by serving weight to expose the difference.

Also check how many servings the tub actually contains.

Amino acids need context

Added amino acids can be legitimate ingredients, but they should be declared. Some protein methods estimate protein from nitrogen, so extra nitrogen-containing compounds can complicate how consumers interpret a headline total.

An ingredient list containing amino acids is not proof of deception. It is a reason to understand what the product claims and how it was tested.

Blends can hide proportions

Ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight, but a proprietary blend may not reveal the amount of every component. That makes comparisons less precise.

Prefer labels that make the protein sources and relevant quantities easy to understand.

What better evidence looks like

Look for a complete label, a coherent serving calculation and a batch-specific report from an identifiable laboratory when a brand publishes one. The report should match product, flavour and batch.

Use careful language: “unclear from the available evidence” is often more accurate than “fake.”
